Cameron Eugene Jackson
1988 - 1994

Established in 1994, in the memory of "little Cameron", whose life was cut way too short at six years old from a rare form of brain cancer. The library was formed with only six books and has extensively flourished for almost fourteen years. Presently there are more than 9,000 books and various other educational materials, a computer center, a Math Clinic, a Drop-In Senior Health Station with Free Internet access for Health Information, free blood pressure screening, plus much, much more.  The Library hosts an annual writer's festival at the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center in Westchester, CA (The Bridge).

Cameron's Mother's Story

Another facet Ms. Jackson has been instrumental in is the promotion of a community literacy festival, "Cameron's Literacy Fair".  This purpose of this event is to promote reading & books; enhance literacy levels of children, teens and families; and encourage the community to embrace a variety of artistic disciplines, including theatre arts, visual arts, music and more.  It gives participants, (with particular emphasis on the youths), an opportunity to explore the richness and vitality of culture.  In commemoration of the anniversary of the library, this annual book festival is held every fall, which celebrates the written word, authors, music, song and dance on a positive up beat.  Book vendors from around the country bring in a treasure of the newest books, fun reading and educational material.  Ms. Jackson has given away new books at the festival to thousands of children to help promote literacy.

Maxine Jackson has been honored with many awards and commendations including those from Senators Maxine Waters, Juanita Millender McDonald, Yvonne B. Burke, Councilman Bernard Parks, The Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, The Howard Hughes Promenade (The Bridge), and many more government officials and entities.  In June of 2007, she was selected "Champion for Children" by Councilman Bernard Parker for "First Five L.A..  In October 2007 she was selected as "A Phenomenal Woman" by KJLH News Commentator, "LA Speaks Out", Jacquie Stephens.  Ms. Jackson served as Co-Chairperson for the Literacy Awareness Committee, for "Community Day 2008" \ held at Los Angeles Southwest College  in January 2008.  This event is hosted by Los Angeles County - Sheriff Lee Baca and Bishop Edward Turner, Hope For Life Foundation and Pastor of Power of Love Church - Los Angeles, CA.

Ms. Jackson is a mother of one adult child, and two grand children (17 ½ months and 9 years old).  Ms. Jackson is a graduate of U.C.L.A. (Mass Communications).
